Oldest ice-core ever drilled dates back 2.7 million years

The Institute for Creation Research

There is no evidence that the ice layers going down for several thousand years were formed for any other reasons than those we know to be in effect today. Since the ice sheet is formed by the accumulation of snow year after year, by drilling from the surface down through the ice sheet, we drill our way back in time. Cylindrical sample drilled from an ice sheet. Rotary drilling is the main method of drilling for minerals and it has also been used for ice drilling. It is known that the ice layers represent annual snows down to a certain level.

National Ice Core Laboratory. Thermal diffusion occurs if the surface is warmer or colder than the bottom boundary the close-off depth. These often involve fossil records, which are not present in ice cores, but cores have extremely precise palaeoclimatic information that can be correlated with other climate proxies. Intelligent infrared cameras may help keep boats from striking killer whales. If a pair of pits is dug in fresh snow with a thin wall between them and one of the pits is roofed over, an observer in the roofed pit will see the layers revealed by sunlight shining through.

Ice Core Dating

Do you know if ice core dating is accurate. If the date of the eruption is not known, but it can be identified in multiple cores, then dating the ice can in turn give a date for the eruption, which can then be used as a reference layer. The big challenge scientists initially faced was dating the ice.

So I asked him to explain to me what I said was wrong or what was right. The DomeC data is more precise and definitive about the delay, which is on the order of a couple of hundred years, although slightly asymmetric. This would also require the proper weather conditions. Liners can be placed inside the drill barrel to enclose the core before it is brought to the surface, but this makes it difficult to clean off the drilling fluid.

  • The earth warms again and the ices melt, leaving what is left on the poles.
  • The cuttings chips of ice cut away by the drill must be drawn up the hole and disposed of or they will reduce the cutting efficiency of the drill.
  • Is there anyone on this site who could refer me to an expert or is an expert?

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. Unfortunately, annual layers become harder to see deeper in the ice core. We also know that polar amplification causes more rapid warming at high-latitudes due to dominant pole-ward circulation and thus heat transport. But seriously, no posts since July has me wondering what happened.

It also means that the ice surrounding the bubbles is older than the air inside. Methane records in particular are used to synchronize deep ice core records. That means it will be about two miles high in Antarctica, and over a mile high in Greenland.

Ice Cores and the Age of the Earth

Minerals in that dust do interact with gases preserved in the icy air bubbles, so much so that carbon dioxide records from Greenland ice cores are very difficult to develop. When the core is brought to the surface, the bubbles can exert a stress that exceeds the tensile strength of the ice, resulting in cracks and spall. The isotopic record of past climate recorded by the bottom layer of the ice core is determined by the age of the ice.

Ice core basics

Consider that Antarctica is a large continental ice sheet surrounded by the Southern Ocean and from this alone it makes sense that temperature changes will be more gradual in the Antarctic. If this was the case then the sample of historic greenhouse gas and temperatures would be censored, that is warm periods with a lot of carbon in the atmosphere would not show up in the core samples. Buried under the snow of following years, the coarse-grained hoar frost compresses into lighter layers than the winter snow.

The confidence in the chronology becomes less the lower in the ice sheet one goes, however. Some of these sources of uncertainty are briefly discussed here by Eric Steig of the University of Washington full disclosure, Eric was my M. If not, which is considered definitive?

Explaining the science of Antarctic glaciers

Yes, I will try to find out more as we go and different things are brought up, if they are, but for now, at first, why wouldn't this be an acceptable model to work with theoretically? The easiest way to explore this question of how Antarctic temperatures relate to the rest of the world is to look at what Greenland ice core temperature records look like. Sulphate also exists in sea salt which is deposited on the ice sheet in small quantities from wind-blown sea spray. Ice cores from different depths are not all equally in demand by scientific investigators, which can lead to a shortage of ice cores at certain depths. But, I have not seen anything proving causation.

Granted, not to ppmv, but at least in one case to ppmv. Additional packing, including padding material, is added. That is why I felt pretty hesitant about it. Ime arguing with my brother about manmade climate change.

Science does that all the time, australia right? This ends up being a politically driven tool to subdue and control American industry. There are several historical markers in Antarctica which can be used to cross check these calculations for the past few thousand years.

About Bethan Davies

How do those temperature variations relate to those at other parts of the globe? If I am wrong in what I remember, just say so. Ice cores are collected from the oldest ice in the interior of ice sheets.

So I am asking for time now from you. Some steps can be taken to alleviate the problem. Diffusion within the firn layer causes other changes that can be measured. How the hole in the ozone layer is affecting climate change.

It depends very much on the precipitation and flow regime. The other benefit is that melted and refrozen snow has fewer bubbles than normal glacier ice that began as snow and was compressed into ice with air bubbles. Also, in Greenland ice cores the layers tend to be very easy to see because there is much more dust in the atmosphere in the Northern Hemisphere summer when so much land area becomes snow-free.

I. Methods of Dating Ice Cores

Results from both Vostok and DomeC shown. In Antarctica, by the time the ice has been buried deeply enough to no longer be influenced by the atmosphere, annual variations have been greatly dampened by diffusion Epstein, et al. Such graphs also identify chemical changes caused by non-seasonal events such as forest fires and major volcanic eruptions. However, if you had read what I wrote, you would have seen that I never postulated only one storm, nor did I attribute everything to Noah's flood.

  1. For future reference, please note here that gradualism is presumed.
  2. Also, as the earth warms, most of that energy is absorbed by the oceans.
  3. Very seriously, my main purpose in going through this paper this way is to show how the presuppositions determined the conclusions.
  4. Placing two electrodes with a high voltage between them on the surface of the ice core gives a measurement of the conductivity at that point.
  5. Conductivity shows an annual cycle and is higher in the summer snow than the winter snow.
  6. Scientists working in the Allen Hills region of Antarctica have drilled the oldest ice core ever.

Encyclopedia of Quaternary Science. For me, this article ended much too soon. Ive seen it in the past, its one of the easiest to understand for most people. The simplest approach is to count layers of ice that correspond to the original annual layers of snow, but this is not always possible. The links I have provided are for very reliable sources which can confidently be cited.

These layers can be counted only so far down because the weight of the ice compresses the layers more and more the deeper they are in the ice. Despite this noise, we are indeed seeing anthropogenic warming emerge from natural variability. The more sandy the soil the more the winds can raise in a shorter time after the rains. Poles left in the snow from year to year show the amount of accumulated snow each year, dating a free spirit and this can be used to verify that the visible layer in a snow pit corresponds to a single year's snowfall.

Ice core basics

You can think of deltaO basically as temperature, but calculating exact degrees-celsius from this proxy is more involved than I am able to go into! Thermal drills, which cut ice by electrically heating the drill head, can also be used, but they have some disadvantages. Once you get a few hundred meters deep, the ice becomes very glassy and more homogeneous to look at, in my experience, but under the right light conditions, experts can still see the layers. Or is it still a suggestion? Fred, mobile dating I suspect you may have seen mislabeled Greenland ice-core graphs based on Alley and the Cuffey and Clow papers.

Ice Core Dating

Where you have tens of centimeters of snowfall each year you can generally see the annual layers if you know what to look for. In, fact, data from most of these ice cores are archived in a few places. Coastal areas are more likely to include material of marine origin, such as sea salt ions.
